ABOUT THE
CONCEPT

The idea for this exhibition had only started to become a reality shortly before the first Covid lockdown in January 2020, and was swiftly put on hold. I needed to come up with a theme though, without any notion of what the future would hold. Everything had changed overnight, and it was challenging enough to react to the next hurdle in my professional life, let alone organise a group show.

Adaptability was the word that kept popping up in my mind: reacting fast to whatever tomorrow holds, finding  a way today to solve the seemingly unsolvable, as an artist, as an individual, and as a member of the closer and wider community. Whenever there is a chance to put together a show, no matter how challenging the circumstances, there will be a way to find like-minded people to collaborate. So ADAPTATION was born, if only in my head, just like that: celebrating our incredible ability to adjust. Re-interpreting is just what artists do best.

There was a long -and worrying- wait until we were given the green light to proceed, slowly at first, and with more and more certainty that we would have a physical (tangible!) exhibition. The group of artists formed: people who have been working through emotions, through silence and solitude, creating art all this time and keeping in touch only by “Instagram-shorthand”.

These artists are more than ready to share what they have to say: The seven, with usually quirky and eccentric compositions in multiple disciplines and from very different walks of life are: Suzy Abrahams, Orsi Cowell-Lehoczky, Wilf Frost, Dani Humberstone, Vivien Phelan, Heather Tobias, and Ann Marie Whaley.

There are still lots of pending questions about the details of our show, regarding a private view and management of  visitors, but be assured, whatever the future holds, we will find a way.

So save the date, and let us tell you our stories, take you to a different place altogether: enjoy our exhibition at the Lightbox Gallery in Woking, between 14-26th September 2021.
